Gum diseases are also called as periodontal disease. It generally occurs with the growth of bacteria. It should be properly treated otherwise chances of breakage of teeth is sure to happen. At first it is the gingivitis which occurs called as the inflammation of the gums and then it leads to periodontitis. But all the periodontitis are not gingivitis.

Apart from the above mentioned causes hormonal changes in the form of puberty, menstruation and pregnancy makes the gums sensitive. A tradition of gum disease in the family is also a major cause. Detection of the bad gums can be seen by bleeding gums, if the gums become tender and bad breath. Receding gums is also a symptom. Dentures in between the teeth that too partially can cause gum disease. Gum disease at times affects only certain teeth. It is the periodontist who recognizes the effect of the gum disease and take proper care. Treatment of the gum disease includes:
- Professional treatment - cleaning professionally in a year or may be twice according to the severity. Scaling and polishing by removal of the plaque.
- Oral hygiene - includes brushing, flossing, using a mouth wash, avoidance of smoking, taking antibiotics and painkillers.
- Leading a healthy lifestyle - incorporation of balanced diet and leading a stress free life results in good gums, drinking plenty of water.
Gum diseases are linked to other disease such as heart disease, diabetes and if you have these diseases the problems of gum increases even more. So in a way the overall health and well being is affected by gum disease. The techniques of brushing and flossing have to be adopted for long lasting teeth free of gum diseases. Care has to be taken as to not to harm the enamel.
