I think one of the best parts about being a dad is the joy that you can bring to your child. I love being able to make my son laugh till it hurts! At two years old the simplest things can make him smile like silly faces and noises, to crazy dances and singing. He loves being tickled or chased around the house while I yell "I'm gonna get you!" He literally laughs so hard he has to ask me to stop for a minute so he can catch his breath before he turns around, starts laughing again and chasing me instead.
His laughter is so innocent and pure. One of my "jobs" as a father is to always keep him laughing and enjoying life's simplest things. Plus, it always brings me back down to reality too to take a minute and not be so serious all the time.
One of the things that surprised me about parenthood is that it's easier than I thought it would be. Okay wait. Don't get me wrong, parenting is definitely hard work and I only have one child! However, despite all of the tempter tantrums, time-outs, messes etc., my son loves to help whenever he can. I've even heard this from other dads with kids my son's age. My son always tries to help me get dressed and put on my shoes. He loves to help cook food in the kitchen. He always brings us things like our cell phone, iPad, TV remote or other things he finds around the house that he sees us use often. He truly believes he's a grown man and that he can do anything!
As a father, I take my role seriously. I don't know everything, and can't do everything but thankfully I don't have to. My special "job" though as a father to my son is just being ME. He doesn't know that I'm not the best basketball player but to him I'm the greatest. He doesn't know that I'm not a doctor, but to him when he gets hurt I can make him feel better. Knowing that someone looks up to you as THE BEST is such a responsibility. Thankfully I'm the best at just being ME and that's just what he needs.
