I caught my four-year-old daughter snooping in our bathroom. Despite the fact that my pain meds were up and out of sight, she managed to do what kids do so well; she improvised and got hold of the bottle. My princess opened the "child safe" push and twist prescription bottle with surprising ease.

Luckily I stumbled upon her at the right time, it could have easily been fatal.

So back to my fail as a parent. No pun intended, but this is a tough pill to swallow because it requires a change in behavior and daily routine. I made the effort and I can truly say I now sleep better at night.

With full disclosure, this incident led me to invent a solution. With that said, regardless of what you use moving forward, I implore you to take all medications, even over the counter meds and put them in a locking container.

I know it sounds like a lot of work, but trust me, had I come across my natural born snooper daughter just a few seconds after the fact, this would be a different conversation.

FACT: Children under 5 are rushed to the emergency room 64,000 times a year for medications they got into at home.
