Unexplained infertility is a common issue. Women who are over 35 years of age and have been trying to conceive for over 6 months, or those less than 35 years of age and have been trying to conceive for a year with no success may have to visit a fertility hospital. Consultation with a doctor helps identify the root cause of the issue after several tests on both partners.
While doctors are able to diagnose the cause of infertility in most cases, there may be some exceptions. Cases where the reasons for infertility are not clear are diagnosed as ‘unexplained infertility’.
Tests for fertility
To be diagnosed with the problem the couple is required to go through an investigation which checks for normal functioning in all the functions required for conception. Some of these tests include the following:
ovarian reserve test for women
semen analysis for men,
hysterosalpingogram for women
A test to confirm ovulation.
There are some other tests that the couple may need to perform, but not all of them affect the treatment. One such test is Laparoscopy, an invasive test performed under general anesthesia. This test helps in the diagnosis of endometriosis, a condition in which the cells from the uterus start growing on the other organs. Laproscopy may also be performed to remove any scars that may be hindering the functioning of the fallopian tubes.
In most cases, the doctor may be able to find only mild symptoms of endometriosis. If there is no symptom found in an ultrasound the doctor may not perform laparoscopy in such case and start to treat the patient for unexplained infertility.
Give it time
If you are less than 35 years of age and if your male partner has no fertility issues, then you should try to conceive on your own. It is frustrating to know that neither the diagnosis nor the treatment is very clear. For those who are over 35 years of age, the chances of conceiving are lower and it thus is recommended that you undergo an infertility treatment if you have not been able to conceive on your own.
Other options for dealing with unexplained infertility
If you are dealing with unexplained infertility, there is no reason to give up hope of starting a family of your very own. Options like IVF (In vitro fertilisation). IUI (Intra uterine fertilization), and even surrogacy are affordable options for couples.
It is important to remember that stress contributes to infertility, and worrying or losing hope may adversely affect your chances of conceiving. So keep an open mind, and approach your diagnosis and treatment with a positive outlook in order to find the best remedy possible for your dilemma.
