"This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well-pleased." -Matthew 3:17

My Dear Son,

You may not realize this, or forget all too often, but I am watching you. I have been watching you ever since you were born. I was there when you took your first breath, your first step, your first leap. I was there for your first skinned knee, your first fight and your first defeat. I was there, holding your hand, when you felt disappointed and even heart broken. I was elated when you discovered your life's passion and watched as you pursued your dreams. I cheered for you as you accomplished goals that I designed for you. I was front and center when you found your heart's desire and took a seat while you watched her walk down the aisle. I wept tears of joy as you brought your first child into this world because you finally understood a glimpse into how much I love you.

A Letter to the Fatherless

I know at times it might have seemed as though I left you, but I never did. I was always right there; waiting, listening, watching, encouraging and protecting you. Since we haven't spoken in a while I wanted to remind you of a few things...

I am proud of you. I am so proud of the man you have become. You have persevered despite any rocky circumstances and have overcome what others would too easily quit. I love the way you work without looking for praise or fame. You constantly put others before yourself and never ask for anything in return. That is honorable. You may not notice, but the people around you admire and respect you too. They try to emulate the life I have helped you to create. I recognize all of these accomplishments but am even more pleased by your humility.

A Letter to the Fatherless

I am proud of the husband you have become. Your love for your wife leaves me with an immense amount of delight. I see the way you protect and provide for her, which gives your marriage an incredible strength. If you haven't noticed lately, she loves you too. She strives to be half the person she believes you to be. Remember that "Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not easily broken." (Ecclesiastes 4:12) It is important to take time just for the two of you because one day when the kids are gone she will be the one by your side. Continue to be her best friend by holding her hand, confiding in each other and most importantly laughing together.

A Letter to the Fatherless

I am so extremely proud of the father you have become. Seeing you with your children is magical. I love the way you lead by example and teach them how to be exemplary humans. You are not just teaching them right from wrong, but you are imparting morals and values that will help them flourish in their own lives. Remember if you "train up a child in the way he should go, when he is old he will not depart from it." (Proverbs 22:6) As I know all too well, kids grow up in just the blink of an eye, you will come to me one day and wish you could have paused more of your time with them. So do not wish any day with them away, even the bad ones, be thankful even in the midst of the craziness. If you could really see the way they adore and appreciate you, I think you might slow down more to catch some of those moments.

A Letter to the Fatherless

I admire all that you are and all that you are yet to be. There is still so much of your life yet to be revealed so stay close to me and I will show you. "For I know the plans I have for you, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." (Jeremiah 29:11) And may you always remember that even though you may not have an earthly father, you do have a Father most high and "I HAVE LOVED YOU WITH AN EVERLASTING LOVE." (Jeremiah 31:3) Take comfort in knowing I AM the only Father you ever really need in this life or the next.

Love,

Your Heavenly Father
