working from home mom

It's the age of information and technology, which means that I can basically work from any place without having to sit behind a desk in a conventional office. A lot of people are finding it much easier to have sources of income without having to work nine to five jobs. This has seen an influx of self-employed people that are effectively running businesses from home. It's all about making use of the benefits of modern technology to create a stable and significant source of income. In case you are starting a job from home (just like me), these are some of the house necessities that you'll require:

Laptop or desktop computer

In home-based business, laptops or desktop computers are preferred as opposed to primarily using smartphones or smart mobile devices for office functions. Such devices are nice and convenient for replying to emails, sending documents and chatting with clients but they don't give us a lot of freedom in terms of typing and using other platforms such as PowerPoint and Excel. Laptops and desktop computers also have larger screens which give you a wider area of view.

Desk and chair

As you create an office environment in the house, you need a desk and chair at your workstation. The chair should be comfortable enough to reduce issues of fatigue and back-pain. The desk should be of the right width and height with drawers for storage of documents and other office items. If you are a woodworker hobbyist you can even make your own desk and chair and save money.

Internet Access

You really can't run a house-based business without having internet connection. This is what will enable you to monitor your business online, reach out to clients, send out necessary communication via email, Skype or social media and keep yourself informed about current affairs. If your business is online based, you need to have reliable internet access 24/7. A good wireless router will cover your entire home without needing to mess with cables. There are many pros and cons of wireless but if you are not an expert in networks I would go with a WiFi router.

Printer and toner

You need a printer and toner for all your printing issues. These will come in handy when printing out documents for clients or for your own use. Contracts need to be signed and kept in hard copy so you'll need to print out the soft copies first. Office work, even if it's home-based, usually requires a lot of printing and having your own printer and toner is one way of ensuring that your job is not interrupted.

Scanner

This is another office equipment that you'll need. Sometimes a client will need you to scan and send an original document to him or her. Having your own scanner will save you a lot of time and will also make it easier for you to meet the demands of the client. They exist in different models so you can select the one that best suits your needs.

Stationery

You'll need printing papers, pens, and notepads especially when you are having conference calls with clients or recruits. You never know when you'll want to jot something down. Here you’ll find a list of must have essential stationery supplies for every small or home office.

Build a business website

Last but not the least, no matter what you do online you will need a proper business website. It makes you look more professional and you can charge more for your services. If you are not a website developer you can hire some reputable companies such as isadoradesign.com or more affordable Leadsfox.com. Or you can learn some basic WordPress skills and build something on your own and save money.

All these are necessary to make your (and mine) home business efficient and drive it towards success. There are people who have made millions of dollars working from home, but we have to be properly set up for it in order to succeed.
