It is a habit that teachers always advise you to learn at least two hours whenever your grades drop or when you are wavering in your learning. The time you spend for learning will be based on the class in which you are, and it is expected to increase when you go from one class to another. This time would also be affected by personal study habits and the goal in your life. While you enter a college, most of your professors would probably ask you to learn only for two hours. But this technique is of less importance since one should not count merely the time, but concentrate on learning effectively. Therefore never count the time limit. Try to obtain more knowledge within the time you have.

Going overboard is over-productive since you should spend significant time learning. It is essential to balance personal life with school work besides evaluating the capacity to focus on certain tasks. Giving more importance to your assignments is a great way to assure that you spend a great deal of time learning a subject. If you concentrate on subjects which need improvement or subjects which are new to you, then your scores would gradually improve. Harder subjects should be given more importance since your mind will grasp tougher subjects only if you have a fresh mind.

But when did thumb rule originated? It started over a century ago when the Carnegie Unit (CU) became the approved measure of class time duration. Does the two-hour rule relevant these days? What if the hours are one, or even three? Why professors and online tutor choose two hours? Studying methods and tools have undergone a significant transformation in the present scenario. With the intervention of computers, laptops, mobile phones and the internet, the way student learns has undergone a significant change. Now a student learns more inside of a class than they learn in their homes. But still, the two-hour rule goes on. But more emphasis should be given to study time. Of greater worry than the focus on time is the lack of direction on things to do during those hours.

A syllabus that emphasises policies won’t get any attention from students. Added to it, a teacher’s advice to study for ten to twelve hours would easily be neglected by the students. Moreover, we lose trustworthiness with our pupils if we tell them to “study two hours per credit” for no other reason than that’s the way it’s been done. Therefore we have to be more bothered about consequences than time.

Suppose if you ask your son to study, they won’t study outrightly. But it doesn’t mean that everything students do outside the class should be graded. Give prominence on mastery instead of telling students on the duration of learning. Direct them to active learning strategies, which help them to use their time productively. Beyond active reading assignments and homework, some activities should be given some focus.

Some say that studying should be done at least for ten hours maximum. But study hours entirely depends on the spare time which you have. Some people have a rare capability of studying for about twelve to sixteen hours. But what really matters is that one should learn productively, and inspire learning smart, instead of learning hard. Master in managing your time and study only for a short duration of time, giving yourself some time for rest, physical health enhancement, and other personal activities.

Never think of shortcuts. Hard work is the only way to success. Create notes so that you don't waste any time in merely reading your whole notebook. Always make use of the free time which you will be getting after school or at school in learning. Don't study continuously for the whole night since your brain demands rest. Always remember to sleep for a minimum of seven hours. But you shouldn't completely be immersed in merely learning and therefore take ten minutes break per every hour.

Majority of the students think that studying in a college will be more difficult than that of school and decides to spend most of their time learning. But they won't recognize the degree of difference through which they will be faced in college. Students think of performing well, but many times they don't know what is expected out of them to excel in college.

It’s high time that two-hour rule should be eliminated. Many students consider studying only before a month or a week before the exam and do their homework hurrying-up only because it’s graded. If we want to produce self-motivated students, this conventional idea of what it means to study must break. The ultimate motto of teachers should broaden and replace pupils’ perceptions of homework and learning by de-emphasizing on time and concentrating on substance. Differentiating between class time, study time, and homework time is essential to club it into an integrated system of activities for excelling in studies. It can be done by being as particular and intentional about structuring students’ out-of-class study activities, graded or otherwise, as we are about what goes on during class.
