My husband, John, is self-employed. For the past 20+ years he has been waking up Monday through Friday by 4:00 in the morning and works at least a half-day on Sundays, usually more. On a good day, he's home by 5:00 pm - which doesn't happen often. Yet, every time he comes home, it's with a smile and open arms for our three children that run to greet him, never too tired to be excited to be home. They have never seen their father angry or in a bad mood. He does diapers and helps with dinner. He does baths and is all-in with the chaos that is bedtime. He sings lullabies and plays tag in the yard. On any given Saturday morning he is cooking up french toast and banana smoothies. He loves and enjoys our children, and he doesn't hide it. It is a joy to watch him be father to our children, and I am always amazed and inspired by his patience and positive attitude. Our children have a foundation that will, hopefully, give them the perspective and grace to face the challenges of life. I wish I could share one moment where he wowed me with his 'dadness' but his value, as far as I see it, is in the consistency of his goodness and his love. His children come first, and they know it. He cares for them with patience. He guides and disciplines them with compassion. And he celebrates them for the people they are. There are a lot of great dads out there, and we are fortunate to have one of them.
