Parents, you’ve got questions, we’ve got answers.

Or just as likely, we’ve got questions and you’ve got answers.

Figuring out who you are and what you want in life is a very long journey. Learning to enjoy that journey may be what life truly is all about. In this article, we are going to look at some ways in which we can get what we want in life and how we can learn more about ourselves along the way.

One of the biggest obstacles I've encountered in life was simply the question, 'Who are you and what do you want to do in life?" It's a huge question. And most of us try to tackle it when we are 20 years old and still in college because everyone expects us to have an answer for it. Our teachers and parents want to hear us answer it. And we try. Some of us are still trying at 50 and beyond.

The reason we struggle to answer this question is because the answer is always changing. There is no definitive answer to "Who am I?" Every day we learn and grow as people. Who you are today is not the same as who you will be tomorrow. So really, it's the question that hinders us. What if you started to ask yourself "How can I challenge myself today?" Answering that question still forces you to learn something about who you are, but also, more importantly, you learn about who you are becoming. That's really the goal, to help ourselves learn and grow.

Travis Fox explains "Figuring out who you are and what you want to be, is more about the unwinding of what you were told to be, act and do. Once you do that, your truest passion will reveal itself and from there you can Architect your life on point and target daily, with ease" I don't know what that statement says to you, but to me, it's trying to say that life isn't about others expectations of you.

Challenging ourselves is also how we end up answering the second part of that question as well. Everyone is told when they are in college that there is a degree or career choice that is perfect for them, that they just have to find out what it is.

So how do we find passion? Well, it's not decided by what degree you decide to pursue I can tell you that. I would've been better off having someone tell me that it didn't matter which degree I chose to pursue. You can find passion in any of them. It's all about waking up and challenging yourself every day of your life.

If you wake up tomorrow and accomplish something you didn't know you were capable of, you will go to bed a different person than you were when you woke up. That's a fact of life. And challenging yourself in that way will give you insight into the world. Passion comes from a deep level of understanding and accomplishment if you think about it. To become passionate about something, like say cooking, you have to start on the journey to becoming a master of it. You have to appreciate it on a deeper level. Passion comes from a sophisticated understanding of something.

So there you have it. How do you figure out who you are and what you want in life? You start asking the question, "How can I challenge myself to try or learn something new today?" That is the question that forces you to learn about yourself. And that is also the question that creates a passion within each of us. There is no limit to what we can be passionate about in life. If you want something in life, then get good at it. Passion brings out the best in all of us, and it will give us everything we need.
