With school and kindergartens closing up for the summer shortly you need to prepare for the inevitable stampede of kids in your home. This means constant supervision. Your office is the place where you come to work and must be childproof.

I learned the hard way when my son decided to staple his finger that offices must be safe for children.

Tip one – make sure all electronics are on a desk

It might sound obvious, but putting electronics out of reach of children can reduce the risk of kids damaging expensive equipment.

Tip two – get rid of any dangerous electronics

Unsafe sockets and loose cabling is a serious danger to children. All it takes is an inquisitive child to stick their hands in a socket for serious consequences.

Tip three – lock your computer

Putting a password on to your computer is the easiest way to ensure your child does not visit any unsafe sites. Many ipads and tablets allow child safe mode. Look into this as an alternative.

Tip four – invest is child safe office furniture

It’s something we don’t think of, but metal chairs or desks with pointy ends can be fatal. All it takes is one slip and a bump on the head against a 90 degree desk corner for severe damage. Think about this next time you are looking for office furniture.

Tip five – lock it up!

If you are really serious about your children’s safety simply lock up your office. A bolt lock will trump any child and is the safest option by fat. However, a safety gate might be a better option. Read more about them here.
