Our babies’ began their fight, especially Nora, way before they entered the NICU. At 17 weeks we were told that twin B, Nora, was growth restricted and was measuring over 3 weeks behind. They saw a spot on her spine and the banana defect in her brain. These were both signs of spina bifida. The doctor also told us that most babies that are this far behind in growth do not make it to birth. Twin A, Lucas, seemed to be right on track. In a couple of weeks, we went back to the specialist. He did not see the banana defect in Nora’s brain, but there were other things that made her brain look abnormal. She still had the spot on her spine. We went back in a couple of weeks and the spot on her spine was barley noticeable. They sent us to Memphis for a second opinion. The doctor there told us that her brain and spine both looked beautiful! We had so many people praying for these babies, and we knew that God had healed our little girl. It was still unknown if Nora would make it to birth or not, but we continued to pray. I was put in the hospital at 29 weeks to be monitored continuously. Our doctor decided it was time to deliver at 32 weeks. He did not want to risk the chance of Nora being stillborn. Lucas was 4lbs and 8oz and Nora was 2lbs 3oz. We have now been in the NICU for two weeks. Our babies had to fight to just make it to the NICU, so I know they will continue to fight to come home. Although it is a roller coaster ride of emotions, we are so thankful for our NICU family. God has been evident this whole time, and we praise Him for our two miracles. Mommy, daddy, and big sister are looking forward to the day we are all home together!
