Dear mamas of daughters,

I donโ€™t have a daughter myself yet, but I feel like there are some hard truths that our little girls should know as they grow up.

There are mean girls out there.

There are girls that will never like her, no matter how hard she tries. There are girls that will get pleasure out of her failure. There are girls that will not include her in their inner circle.

There are girls that are unhappy with themselves, and will take their unhappiness out on her.

There are girls that will pretend to like her to her face, but when she finally gets comfortable with them and lets them in, they will slam the door in her face.

There are girls that will say terrible things about her behind her back.

There are girls that will start horribly untrue rumors about her.

There are girls that will try and get other girls to dislike her. They might be successful too, sometimes.

There are girls that will make fun of her.

There are girls that will stop at nothing to make her feel horrible about herself.

There are girls that will be jealous of her and will never be happy for her success.

There are girls that will watch her fall and then kick her when sheโ€™s down.

No, these truths are not easy to face. Growing up, I faced every single one of these and then someโ€”in fact, Iโ€™ve even dealt with girls like this today.

As mothers of daughters, please teach them to always be strong and keep their heads held high, so their crowns never slip. Please remind them that no matter what words or spoken or what stones are thrown, they will come out okay.

As mothers of daughters, please reinforce their capability to make their own choices. Please tell them that the opinions of others should never sway their decisions, especially when it comes to other people.

As mothers of daughters, please make sure they know that standing up for others will never go out of style. Please give her space to judge and learn the character of others in her own time. Please let them know that removing toxic people from their lives is OKAY. Whether itโ€™s blocking them on social media or deleting their number from their phone, itโ€™s ALWAYS okay.

As mothers of daughters, make them always believe that they are capable of being and doing anything that they set their mind to. Though they may not always make the choices you would make, let them learn from their mistakes.

Dear mamas of daughters, may your little girls always do the right thing and go into each day with an open mind, an open heart, and open arms.
