5 Things You Wish Your Teen Would Stop Doing at Home

Living with a teenager isn't easy. That's putting it politely. We can handle most things, but there are just some things we wish they would stop doing at home, like:

1. Leaving Clothes on Chairs

Every teenager has that "chair" – the one that houses their entire wardrobe. Why bother doing laundry or even having a closet when you have a desk chair.

I have a theory that this clothes-chair-hanging habit is in the teen handbook on annoying parents. Apparently, every teen has that "chair." I know this because every parent I know complains about it.

Why is it so hard to hang clothes up?

2. Forgetting to Bring Food and Dishes Out of the Bedroom

Let's be honest: every teenager's room has a "special" smell. It could be the dirty pile of clothes in the corner that hasn't been washed in a month. Or, maybe – just maybe – it's moldy sandwich that's been sitting on the desk for a few days.

Teens have a bad habit of eating in their rooms (even when they're not supposed to) and forgetting to bring the dishes out of the room.

That, kids, is how you get a smelly bedroom. It's hard to break this habit because teens aren't embarrassed by it. Their friends do it, too. The scent is familiar. It's just like being at home.

3. Turning the Bathroom into a Torture Chamber

Some mornings can feel like a marathon. It's hard enough to get teens out of bed on time, let alone shower and dressed. When they do make it to the shower, they have to rush to get ready.

By the time they leave the house, the bathroom looks like a hurricane hit it. Shampoo bottles are on the tub floor, yesterday's clothes are strewn across the counter, make up is everywhere.

Speaking of bathroom habits, teens also have a bad habit of clogging the pipes. We've had to have someone come out and do a sewer inspection because the kids were flushing paper towels and wet wipes down the toilet. When we started having to plunge every single morning, it was pretty clear that there was an issue.

That's just another way the bathroom has turned into a torture chamber. You never know what you're going to get when you lift the toilet seat (yikes).

4. Being Loud

We get it – you love your music. I don't mind a little loud music, but at 3am? No. Also, we can hear you talking to your friends – down the street.

To say that teens are loud is an understatement.

It's a part of the development process. It's just a phase, I know. But as parents, we wish they would stop doing it. Inside voice, kids.

Quiet time is a thing of the past, unless you invest in a good set of earplugs.

5. Wearing Headphones. All. The. Time.

You try having a conversation with your teen. No response. Is she ignoring you? No. She just can't hear a word you're saying because her earbuds are lodged so far into her ear, they've become a part of her head.

As annoying as this may be, at least she isn't blaring her music out the bedroom window to impress the neighborhood kids.
