You love being a mom, but you miss your career. If you can't bear the thought of putting your little one in daycare, starting your own business may be the perfect solution. Here are 5 business ideas for stay-at-home moms.

1. Pet Services

Pets are a part of the family, and we want to give them the best care possible. That's why so many working families hire dog walkers and mobile groomers to keep Fido looking and feeling his best. Pet sitting, doggy daycare and other pet-related services are in high-demand.

If you love animals and have experience caring for them, a pet services business may be a good fit for you. While you may not necessarily need certification or training (check your local laws), having these credentials will give you more clout with members of the community.

2. Licensed Day Care Operator

Running a licensed day care service out of your home allows you to care for your children and others as well. Day care services are in high demand, and getting started is easy.

But before you start putting advertisements in local papers, research your local laws. You may or may not need to be licensed to operate a day care out of your home. Even if a license is not required, having one will make your services more appealing to parents.

You may also be required to get:

  • A background check on you and all other adults in your home.
  • Extra insurance to cover extra passengers in your vehicle and to cover liabilities.
  • First-aid certification or CPR. Some states require CPR certification as well as course work on abuse prevention, nutrition, curriculum, child development and other health education.

Running a day care service may be complicated, but it can be a profitable venture for a stay-at-home mom.

3. Blogging or Writing

If you have a knack for writing, consider starting your own blog or working as a freelance writer. Getting started requires little-to-no overhead, and you don't need any special certifications or training.

Not sure where to start? Try blogging about your passions. Maybe you love being a mom and want to share tips and advice. Maybe you love fashion or traveling. Whatever you love – blog about it.

If you'd rather write for someone else, freelance writing is a great option. You can choose to be a ghostwriter (writing without taking credit) or build up your reputation and write for publications. Another option is to delve into copywriting, which can be a very lucrative career.

4. House Cleaning

House cleaning services will always be in demand. If you don't mind some good-old-fashioned hard work, this may be a good business option for you.

Getting started requires just a few cleaning supplies, which you probably have on hand, and a little marketing. Word of mouth is the best form of advertising in this business, so focus on offering great service and prices.

5. Virtual Assistant

Like a little variety in your daily routine? As a virtual assistant, no two days will be the same. You may do some research one day and run errands the next. Every day brings something new. Starting out as a virtual assistant (VA) is relatively easy and doesn’t require a big investment. You can choose to start your own business, or find jobs on freelance platforms, like Upwork.
