Whether you’re a first-time mom or are a seasoned motherhood pro, you may feel like your style has been lacking since you first became a mother. If so, you’re not alone. According to a survey conducted by the Pew Research Center, 71 percent of women face a lot of pressure to be physically attractive in addition to the other pressures and responsibilities of motherhood including being an involved parent, being successful in their career, etc. However, with 70 percent of new mothers doing between three and eight load of laundry a week and fulfilling all of their other motherhood responsibilities on top of their responsibilities at work, it seems hard to find the time to look and feel stylish—there’s barely any time to get enough sleep, and only 20 percent of new mothers report getting more than seven hours of sleep a night.

Besides the lack of time, the changes that a woman’s body goes through when she becomes a mother, (whether for the first or third or even fifth time), can make it difficult to feel as confident and comfortable in your own skin as you once did. And on top of that, there’s the ever-present mess that comes with being a mom including spit-up stains, chocolate smears, snot runs, etc. Believe it or not, though, you don’t have to hire a housekeeper, nanny, and every caretaker in the book in order to have the time to be a stylish mom. There are some things that you can start doing now to help you feel more stylish and confident while you rock your motherhood responsibilities.

1. Find Clothing that Flatters

Every body is different, and every body will be different from what it was after going through the changes that come with becoming a mom, and that’s okay. The key is to find clothing styles that flatter your body type and accentuate your assets. For example, if your body type is more “pear shape”, then V-necks, bell sleeves, A-lines, and bootcut are styles that will fit you more flatteringly. If you have more of a “apple shape”, though, then flowy tops, boyfriend cuts, skinny jeans, and leggings, are all styles that will flatter you.

2. When in Doubt, Choose Jeans

Motherhood is a full-time job and enough to keep you busy all-day. When you have a particularly busy schedule, it can be tempting to throw on some sweats or grab some basketball shorts and head out the door. While you may need to do that every once in a while, it’s always best to opt for jeans. Even if you’re just heading to the grocery store, jeans will help your outfit look more intentional and help you feel more stylish.

3. Use Dry Shampoo

Dry shampoo is a mom’s best friend! It’s hard enough to find time to get your kids bathed on a regular basis, let alone get your hair washed and done each day. Dry shampoo will help you feel fresh and mask how long it’s been since you’ve had the chance to wash your hair, helping you maintain your style and keep your hairdos looking stylish with less effort than getting in the shower, washing your hair, and waiting for it to try takes.

4. Accessorize

One of the biggest keys to style is accessorizing. Even a plain t-shirt with some basic jeans can be dressed up and made to look like a Insta-worthy ensemble with the right necklace, earrings, and jacket. You don’t need to buy an entire collection of jewelry, but keeping a few staple pieces including necklaces, earrings, bracelets, belts, jackets, and hair pieces will help you dress up any outfit—no matter how plain—keeping your look stylish.

5. Simplify Your Makeup Routine, but Don’t Drop It Altogether

There’s simply no time to spend hours in front of the mirror applying the perfect layer of concealer and foundation, then contouring and highlighting, and getting the perfect wing-tip for your eyeliner. You’ve got little people to chase down. It may be tempting to drop your makeup routine altogether, but if your simplify it instead of dropping it completely, you can still look and feel stylish without having to put in all the effort. Try using just the basics like tinted moisturizer, colored lip balm, mascara, and some neutral colored shadow—you’ll look and feel great and will be able to finish your makeup routine in minutes.

6. Get the Right Cut

What comes to mind when you think of “the mom cut”—do you think of a bob or a long pixie? The truth is, there’s no one cut that is better for moms than another—for some moms the best cut is a low-maintenance, ready to go pixie cut, but for others it might be long layers that can easily be thrown into a ponytail or bun. The trick is to choose the low-maintenance haircut that is right for you and your lifestyle. Having the right cut will help you look and feel stylish day in and day out.

7. Perfect the 5-Minute Hair-Dos

If there’s anything everyone can agree on when it comes to being a parent, it’s that it keeps you busy and requires a lot of time, leaving you with less time to do things like your hair. While ponytails and braids are great hair-dos to use, there are plenty of other five-minute hair-dos that you can learn that will help you shake things up and maintain your style, even as a busy mom.

8. Take Time to Get a Mani/Pedi

There’s nothing like a fresh manicure and pedicure, even if it’s winter and no one will be seeing your toes. As simple as it may seem, freshly painted nails can help add style and statement to any look. Plus, you’re a busy mom and deserve some time away to add a little bit of a pop or sparkle to your fingers and toes—even if you opt to do your mani/pedi yourself.

9. Remember that Sportswear can be Fashionable Too

Although it’s best to choose jeans if you’re ever in doubt, there are days when jeans just don’t sound comfortable, won’t work for the day’s activities, or you’re out of clean jeans altogether. In those cases, you don’t have to throw style out the window—there are sportswear pieces that are comfortable and fashionable too! For example, leggings and long tops are sportswear pieces that make for a stylish combo.

10. Dress Up Your Feet Too

Shoes can make or break an entire look, so it’s important to think about your feet too when you’re getting ready for the day. Instead of grabbing your well-worn sneakers, opt for some ballet flats or a pair of boots with a wedge heel. Your shoes can act as the cherry on top, (or rather, bottom), of your entire look and keep you feeling like a stylish mom.

11. Take Time to Feel Good on the Inside

Style may be an outward expression, but it starts on the inside. You’re busy and have a lot to do so it’s hard to find time for you but taking the time to feel good on the inside and recoup from your busy day will help you feel more confident. And, believe it or not, confidence isn’t just an internal thing—it can be expressed and shown on the outside too.

12. Do You

There are tons of fashion and style tips and tricks out there telling you what you should and shouldn’t do if you want to really be a stylish mom. When it comes down to it, though, the only rule is to do what makes you feel like you. Forget any rules about avoiding certain colors in certain seasons or straying away from certain styles. What makes you feel most comfortable, confident, and stylish is what you should do.
