Eggplant with a brown inside!

Hello!

When I purchased my eggplant two days ago, it felt firm and fine. I kept it in the fridge. When I sliced it up this morning, it was brown throughout (still feels firm!). Is there a way to tell when buying whether or not it is rotten? Is it okay to eat when it is brown(ish) inside?

Thanks for your help!

Mary
