I had on numerous occasions read about Slovenia and formed the opinion that it was one of the best skiing destinations in the world. I was never wrong, at least from personal experience.

I had a long holiday season ahead of me and had to take my family with me. I chose to travel to Slovenia. I had particularly read about the Julian Alps region, home to Triglav National Park and Lake Bohinj. I quickly made arrangements and booked to stay at Bohinj Ski Resort for the whole duration of our skiing expedition. As I later came to realize, the destination offered more than I had expected. I had planned for a fortnight of skiing within and around the Julian Alps but my wife and two kids ended up spending a month in Slovenia.

We landed at Ljubljana Airport in the picturesque capital early in the morning. I decided to rent a car for use for the whole duration of our stay. We drove all the way to Bled, a small town in the Julian Alps region before proceeding to the resort. It turned out to be a family-friendly resort. I was happy that our two kids were well catered for. The prevailing atmosphere was not that of a resort but a homely atmosphere.

I really loved and enjoyed the fact that we could all go out to ski as a family, thanks to a ski school with multi-lingual ski instructors who ensured that my wife and the two kids received the best instructions, at least for a start. Since skiing in Bohinj is extremely popular, I was confident that our instructor would be a good one, and I was right, he helped out a lot and kept everyone safe.

We dedicated the first three days of our holiday to skiing. As I came to realize, almost all the activities we came to engage in were within Triglav National Park. The region boasts of diverse terrain, which made it possible for our kids to ski with ease. Indeed, you will find the terrain very suitable for children and adults alike.

We spent the next three days exploring Lake Bohinj, which is right within the park. Although this was not part of my plan, it proved to be beneficial to our kids. Indeed, I personally came to appreciate the fact that we came into this region. The lake provided us with the golden opportunity to have a boat ride to its western edge from where we were able to explore the majestic Savica Waterfall complete with its 500-zigzag staircase climb to its viewing platform that provides a spectacular view of the waterfall and surrounding areas.

We were lucky to have visited while the weather was not in a bad condition. This is because we had the opportunity to visit the Vintgar Gorge. Access to the gorge is by an 1893 wooden footbridge that stretches over 1,000 meters along River Radovna. This was a memorable experience taking into account the fact that we were able to explore the Pokljuka Ravine, 40 meters deep ravine naturally carved into limestone by the water that flows from Pokljuka glaciers.

Although our two kids could not climb the over 2,860 meter Mount Triglav, we managed to reach the top using the cable car from Ukanc for a spectacular view of Lake Bohinj and the surrounding mountains. I was really happy to see my wife and kids enjoy canoeing in the many gorges in the park and rafting on River Soca.

Our holiday was soon coming to an end. Realizing what they would miss, our two kids came up with a very bright idea. They were no doubt enjoying themselves and they suggested that we combine different activities whenever we went out. Thanks to them, I had the best skiing holiday ever. We spent the rest of the days hiking in mid-mornings before skiing. We would wrap up the days exploring the many gorges in the park.

We checked out of Bohinj Ski Resort a day before boarding our flight back home. We traveled back to Ljubljana, the capital where we spent a few hours visiting The National Museum of Slovenia located along Maistrova Street. It is now months after that memorable holiday and our two kids still have fond memories of the place and the activities they engaged in. I cannot wait but plan for another visit, at least for their benefit.
