Types of Baby Car Seats

Baby seats are divided into two main categories; infant seats, and convertible car seats. Infant car seats are usually only rear-facing. These are designed to hold up to 40lbs. With convertible seats, the capacity can be as much as 80lbs, and may be both rear- or forward-facing, depending on your needs. 3-in-1 types are also available, which also have a booster option for older kids. Not all 3-in-1 car seats are convertible, many are forward-facing only.

While buying a convertible car seat for your infant may seem like the cheapest option, it may not be the safest. Experts claim that tiny newborn babies are safer in infant seats which are designed particularly for their smaller, more fragile frames. Should you opt to go straight for the convertible, be sure to look for seats with lots of extra padding. Also remember that convertible seats, which are installed in the car, are less mobile and cannot be conveniently removed with baby intact as many infant seats can do. Many infant seats also snap very easily into a compatible stroller, a convenience you may miss if you straight to convertible.

Choosing the Right Car Seat

These are the factors you should keep an eye on when deciding which is best for you.

Comfort: When a comfy seat is well padded without itchy harnesses, you have a happier, less-cranky baby.

Adjustable / Adaptable Features: As your child grows up, you want the straps and seat to be able to grow with them, so that you don’t need to keep replacing the seat. Some models allow for belt adjustments that are fitted with quick-release single-handed buckles.

User-friendliness: Many seats have been awarded star rating to indicate how quick and easy they are to install and use. Pay attention to these ratings, because tricky straps and buckles can really make a stressful day more stressful.

Safety: Be sure to look for a car seat with a 5-point harness for your baby. This means that the seat features a strap for each shoulder, a strap for baby’s hip, and a strap which fits between your child’s legs. These are found in most car seats and are vital safety features.

Protection from Side Impact: Not all car seats feature custom-made shock-absorbing foam inserts, which provide additional head and chest protection should you find yourself in a car accident where there is side-impact.

Cleaning: Baby car seats with covers that are detachable are far easier to clean than covers which don’t come off. Kids are notoriously messy, so this is something to keep in mind when shopping.
