If you are looking for fun family activities for you and your kids, Calgary will truly leave you spoilt for choice. With one of the youngest populations in Canada, it is no wonder that there is such an abundance of kid friendly things to do and see. From adrenaline filled adventures on Calaway Park’s many rides and roller coasters to walking amongst life size dinosaurs at the Calgary Zoo, Calgary is the place to be for amazing family bonding experiences.

Calgary Zoo

Calgary Zoo is one of the best in North America, and you can see almost 900 different species of animals from all around the world. If plant life is your thing, you will be pleased to know that the zoo also boasts six acres of botanical gardens where you can unwind and explore, as well as beautiful butterfly gardens. The zoo has animals from every imaginable environment; from rainforests and savannahs to deserts and arctic wastelands. In addition, there is also an impressive dinosaur exhibit where your kids are sure to be wowed by these life sized prehistoric giants.

Escape Rooms

Escape rooms are an extremely popular entertainment trend of late, and for very good reason. They are a truly immersive experience where you and your team are the main characters of a real life adventure game; complete with challenges, puzzles and brain teasers. What’s more, escape rooms are an experience for the whole family, as you have to work together to figure out a way to escape an adventure of your own choosing. While there are several escape rooms to choose from, Escape Hour is by far the best escape room in Calgary, with plenty of various themes to choose from. Not only that, but there are a large number of customization options that allow the experience to be tailor made to suit your group.

The Hangar Flight Museum

Built in 1941 near the Calgary International Airport, the Hangar Flight Museum originally served as a flight training school. Today it serves as a monument to a century of Canadian flight, with a huge collection of both civilian and military aircraft. The collection spans from the iconic Sopwith Triplane that saw action in World War One to high tech modern jet fighters. There are also many hands on activities, interactive displays and well as flight simulators that will leave both you and your kids entertained while also teaching you a thing or two about the principles of flight.

Fort Calgary

Fort Calgary is a National Historic Site, and the original birthplace of the city of Calgary. Founded by the North West Mounted Police in 1875 as a series of forts, Fort Calgary quickly grew into a thriving settlement and safe haven for the settlers that would later become residents of Calgary. You can explore the dynamic and colourful history of Calgary in the Interpretive centre, dress up as an iconic Mountie and take a look at the other side of the law by spending some time in authentic jail cells. The best time to visit the Fort is during holidays, as there are a bunch of special family-friendly activities during those times. During Canada day, for example, there is a free pancake breakfast and all day festival like celebrations.

Bow Habitat Station

This eco-park is a testament to the diversity and majesty of Alberta’s wildlife, fish, water and wetlands. Bow Habitat Station offers truly unique hands on learning experiences for all ages. You can feed fish on a tour of a fish hatchery, try your hand at fishing on Trout Pond, and even crawl through a life size beaver dam exhibit. You can make the most of a sunny day by taking a 45 minute guided nature walk, during which you can identify plants and animals that call this beautiful wetland environment home. During winter months, you can even rent snowshoes for you and your kids for an authentic winter wonderland hike.

Albertans are world famous for their hospitality, and this goes double for kids. Whatever you decide on doing during your visit to Calgary, you are guaranteed to have a family friendly experience that you and your kids will treasure for a lifetime.
