If your family is anything like mine, you spend a lot of time traveling and taking in all the world has to offer. Despite how often we find ourselves on the road, there is nothing that beats eating together as family (whether you cooked it yourself of not).

Over the course of our travels as a family, we’ve tried lot of interesting food. Where some were definitely just to make a memory, others stuck with us and are now frequently featured on the dinner table at home. With that in mind, I put together my 7 favorites that every family should try at least once.

1. Australia: Meat Pie

While this may not sound appealing to you right now, don’t knock it until you try it. This is one of those dinners that is famous in Australia, with people in many other parts of the world getting in on the action as well. It doesn’t matter if you eat it at home, at a restaurant, or on the fly, a meat pie is sure to hit the spot. The best part? It's an easy recipe to make at home.

2. Belgium: Mussels and Fries

If you live in the United States, you know that burgers and fries are a way of life, but did you know that people in Belgium look at mussels and fries in the same manner?

It may not be what you’re used to eating with fries, but once you give this dish a try it may soon turn into one of your favorites. If you have a picky eater, it may be hard to get the initial bite down but trust me, once you do- they'll love it!

3. United States: Burger and Fries

As noted above, burgers and fries go together hand in hand in the United States. You can’t have one without the other. Over the years, the hamburger has taken on many forms. In today’s world, you won’t have any problem finding a creation that suits your taste buds.

4. Brazil: Pudim

Some people eat it as a snack. Other people only chow down after they have a filling dinner. Either way, pudim is sure to put a smile on your face. This dessert is everywhere in Brazil, so you won’t have to search hard to find what you’re looking for.

5. England: Steak and Kidney Pie

If you’re going to travel to England in the near future, make sure you leave room in your stomach for some steak and kidney pie. With pork kidneys and lamb melting in your mouth, many people look forward to this dinner time favorite as often as possible.

6. Greece: Spanakopita

Don’t let the silly name fool you: spanakopita has been a Greek specialty for more than 400 years. You can visit any bakery in the country and you’re likely to find this feta and spinach pie for sale.

7. Hungary: Goulash

If you’re the type of person who can fill up on a hearty stew, goulash is one for you to consider. Don’t let the red color put you off. This stew is sure to fill even the biggest of stomachs. It’s a dinner time favorite in Hungary, but it’s also something that people in this country eat throughout the day as well.

Final Thoughts

Expanding your palette is one of the best ways to bond. It's even better when you can travel with your kids and show them the world through a dinner plate.

Even if a fancy trip isn't in the budget, do what you can to expand your tastes and try foods from around the world. Sure, you'll find a lot of foods that you absolutely hate. However, you'll also find tons of new recipes you can add to your family table.

What are your thoughts on these dinner time favorites? Do you enjoy these foods as much as the next person? Do you have anything you would like to add to this list?
