5 Ways to Help Stressed Out Kids Decompress at Home

When your kids come home from school, work, or even spending time with friends, it can be challenging to find a way to effectively help them decompress from the stress of daily life. Kids have much more to deal with today than we did when growing up, so it’s imperative that as parents we do what we can to help our kids feel their best. In fact, we even noted that, through one survey, roughly 50% of kids feel stressed.

While all kids are different, there are a few different tips that can help most of them decompress. Let’s look at five of those.

Essential Oil Diffusers

Essential oils are widely known for their abilities to help calm the nerves and induce relaxation. The American College of Healthcare Sciences even recognizes their benefits, providing research of three specific oils that have proven to reduce stress.

Sometimes, though, kids aren’t fond of the idea of using the oils in normal ways to get the full benefit.

Enter oil diffusers. They take essential oils and diffuse them into a mist that permeates whatever room the diffuser is in. Turning on these diffusers before your kids come home can help them relax almost immediately.

Making animals or other creations from paper is one activity which almost all kids really love. If you’re not great at origami, don’t worry - there are plenty of online resources that’ll help you learn the art so you can easily teach your kids.


What’s one skill you wish you’d learned earlier on in life? Cooking is high on the list whenever this question is asked, and it’s an activity that’s great for getting rid of stress.

Cooking dinner, baking cookies, or letting your kids choose what they want to make is a great way to help them get their minds off school so they can relax and have that decompression at home. Even Psychology Today has noted the stress-relieving effects of cooking, so this is an option you shouldn’t overlook. “Culinary therapy is . . . being used as part of the treatment for a wide range of mental and behavioral health conditions, including depression,” wrote Linda Wasmer Andrews.

Get rid of your Stress

If you’re stressed, your kids will pick up on it. They’re incredibly observant that way, and while it’s not the easiest thing to try and get rid of your stress, working out, cleaning the house, or finishing up the day’s errands before you see your kids will do wonders for your stress levels - and theirs.

This claim is backed up by research presented in a Forbes article, where author Alice G. Walton wrote, “There’s a small but intriguing body of evidence suggesting that beyond a child’s disposition, a parent’s stress level can affect a child’s very makeup, including his or her risk of mood disorders.”

So working on your stress levels doesn’t just help you - it helps your entire family.

Start a Garden

This one may seem a bit odd, but it works quite well. If you live in an area where it’s possible, start some type of garden with your kids. Put them in charge of their own plants - watering, weeding, etc., - and they’ll have something to look forward to when they come home from school every day.

According to Mommy University, gardening helps engage all the senses, so it’s an in-depth experience for kids. Even NPR has recognized the stress-relieving benefits of gardening, not to mention how well the activity helps build better intrafamily relationships.

Helping your kids decompress isn’t always the easiest activity, but it’ll make serious changes in how well they do in school, their development, and their overall happiness level.
