Parenting is never an easy task and it takes a lot of effort to bring up a child. It is the home and the surroundings that shape any child’s personality.

One important aspect of a person’s nature is the strength of his mind - something that develops with care and encouragement. While raising children, it is of utmost importance we prepare them for not only the good things but also the challenges and setbacks that life has to offer.

Raising mentally strong children takes a lot of resilience and positive attitude from the parent’s end because, the first educator children is their parents. But, sadly, the truth is, sometimes, we get so caught up in our daily activities and giving them formal education, that we forget the little things that are responsible for bringing out the strength of the mind in a person.

Here are a few things that you can keep in mind, regularly practice and teach your children in order to make them mentally strong.

1.Teach them- It’s okay to make mistakes.

One of the most inevitable things in life are the mistakes we make- and, mistakes are only a part of the learning process as we go through life.

Allow your child to make mistakes and teach them it is not something that they should be ashamed of but, something that they should learn from. Let them face the basic hurdles that come with mistakes, but more than anything- show them the right way.

2. Teach them- to control their emotions:

Unfortunately, most of us are not comfortable with allowing our children to acknowledge negative emotions. This leads to them being emotionally unprepared.

Educate your children about their emotions, the influence of these emotions and how to deal with them rather than ignoring them.

Validating these emotions will only help them recognize the choices they have while dealing with them. Overall, this will help them to be emotionally stronger.

3. Teach them- to independently deal with uncomfortable situations:

When you see that your child is in trouble, do not immediately rush to their rescue. Wait and see how they deal with them. Eventually, they will learn. You need to understand the process they undergo while trying to solve the situation only makes them stronger. Check 40 child safety principles

4. Teach them- they do not always need approval:

When we see how the world is going, it becomes very difficult to raise confident children who are able to value themselves. Social media and the external environment put constant pressure to be up to the standards that are set.

While everything has become about “flaunting” and the “likes” in the virtual world, it is imperative to teach a child that they do not need this type of approval to be successful.

The only approval they actually need is from themselves and their achievements do not depend on the number of likes on social media.

5. Teach them- to Face their Fears:

Children are bound to have their own fears and sometimes, these fears haunt us even as adults. Teach children to face their fears through words of encouragement.

Equip your child with the necessary tools to face what they fear and one-step-at-a-time, help them conquer it.

Do not forget to often reward them for their courageous little steps- and that can even be cheering or praising them for their bravery.

6. Teach Them- Change is Inevitable

As humans, it is not always easy to allow things to happen as they are happening in our lives and we always try to resist any changes that are coming through.

Children will also try to resist changes hence, it is important we teach them that things will not always remain the same and things around us will constantly change. You can always become a role model and teach them important lessons through your behavior. After all, the only constant thing in life is change.

7. Teach them- the importance of character:

Help them build a strong character with deeply ingrained sense of morals, ethics and values. As parents, create new opportunities or situations everyday where you can emphasize your values.

For example: you can highlight the importance of being truthful is they have made a mistake rather than hiding the truth to save themselves.

An important lesson you can give your child is to take personal responsibility for their actions and to stay away from the blame game.

Once values are embedded in a child, it will be easier for them to make difficult yet healthier choices.

8. Teach them- the importance of positive self-talks and gratitude:

It is obvious that children will face criticism from their surroundings but, it is very important that they do not attack themselves with negative self- talk.

Even if your children are in very negative situation, teach them to rephrase their negative self-talk to positive ones and to see the situation differently so that they develop a realistic outlook on life. You can also cultivate the habit of practicing gratefulness in children.

These steps will definitely help your children to perceive the whole circumstance with optimism.

And with changing perceptions, they will be able to make the best use of whatever they have at hand.

9. Teach them- Life Skills:

Teach your children specific skills that will help them do better in life.

These skill sets include problem-solving skills, self-control skills, social skills etc. Besides giving them formal education, it is important we teach kids to face life as it comes.

10. Teach them- to move on

Dwelling in the past, especially if the situation is negative leads to depression and other psychological problems.

Sometime children concentrate more on their failures rather than their achievements and this reduces their confidence. Hence, it is important we teach children to accept what they have not been able to achieve and to go ahead with persistence and renewed efforts. Most importantly, teach them to be compassionate to themselves.

Doing this will not only instill confidence in them, but, they will also learn to be more accepting.

These are just some of the various things that you can teach your child right at home- these may seem to be small steps but, the impact that they make on children is very strong. Remember the importance of your role because after all, as a parent, you are your child’s first teacher.
